Role Overview: We are seeking a skilled Crater to build crates to house coils and unit coolers during transportation. The Crater is responsible for laying out, cutting, fabricating, and assembling crates to ensure safe and secure transportation of products.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Primary Functions:

    • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
    • Lay out, cut, and fabricate crates for coils and unit coolers.
    • Read specifications and inspect products to determine size, shape, materials, and types of supports to be used.
    • Lay out dimensions on material with ruler, measuring tape. Saw materials to size. Assemble materials.
    • Place products in containers and bolt heavy pieces to the bottom of the container or skid.
    • Wrap and pad products with excelsior, paper, or other packing materials.
    • Build crates around large or odd-shaped articles and nail covers onto crates.
    • Wrap and tighten metal bands around crates.
    • Attach identification labels or stencils containing shipping destination, weight, and type of product contained.
    • Repair broken crates as necessary.
    • Count items to be packed to ensure compliance with shipping orders and weigh loaded crates.
    • Move containers to shipping area, and move lumber, paper, and other wrapping supplies to crating area. Sharpen saw blades.
    • Check work and ensure quality.
    • Contribute to team efforts by working with others and accomplishing related functions as needed.

  • Comply with government regulations, laws, company policies, and procedures.
  • Work overtime as necessary.
  • Attend work as required.
  • Arrive for work on time.
  • Charge time accurately in time and attendance system to ensure proper labor distribution and payroll.
  • Follow manufacturing instructions, work independently without constant supervision, and be self-motivated to complete job assignments on time.
  • Care for tools and equipment, and notify maintenance of equipment issues.
  • Clean work area as required.
  • Sign on/off jobs in IFS.
  1. Desired Qualifications:

    • Education & Experience: A high school level of education is preferred for this position in order to continue upward advancement within the company. The employee must be able to understand directions from supervisors.
    • Skills: Effective communication skills, good listening abilities, ability to read and comprehend written instructions, basic mathematical skills, ability to control operations of equipment or systems, and good people skills for teamwork.
    • Certificates, Licenses, or Training: On-site training, forklift license preferred.

Level/Grade:

  1. Beginning Level: Meets minimal quality standards, requires more time than estimated to complete work.
  2. Proficient Level: Meets quality standards, completes work within estimated hours.
  3. Advanced Level: Meets quality standards, completes work faster than estimated.

Interaction with Others:

Reports to the QC & QA Supervisor. Must be able to accurately receive, understand, and follow instructions from supervisor/lead. It is essential that the employee works cooperatively with all RAE team employees and shows a spirit of cooperation. The employee must be able to get along well with coworkers and be willing to ask and answer questions as needed.

Working Environment:

Work is performed in an industrial production area for a manufacturer of refrigeration and HVAC equipment. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level is high in some areas. The employee may experience extreme temperatures in both winter and summer, and there may be stress due to deadlines, product quality standards, and seasonal variations in hours worked based on production demands.
