Role Overview: The Coil Product Developer is responsible for the end-to-end engineering of custom heat exchanger coils, including thermal and mechanical design, drawing creation, and production release. This position works closely with Sales, Service, and Manufacturing to deliver accurate, cost-effective designs that meet performance and reliability requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design Engineering & Documentation

    • Engineer heat exchanger coils in accordance with customer specifications, applicable standards, and internal design guidelines.
    • Select materials, tube and fin geometry, and circuiting strategies using engineering judgment and selection software.
    • Create engineering drawings, including detailed mechanical layouts, circuiting diagrams, and bill of materials (BOMs).
    • Translate customer or application requirements into manufacturable designs using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and other engineering tools.
    • Conduct thermal performance reviews and implement revisions or optimizations as needed.
    • Review and release complete design packages to Production, ensuring design intent and manufacturability.
  2. Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Interface with Sales and Application Engineering to clarify specifications, evaluate technical tradeoffs, and support project scoping.
    • Support Procurement by specifying alternate materials and identifying qualified suppliers when needed.
    • Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering and shop personnel to troubleshoot coil build issues and support design improvements.
    • Participate in design review and continuous improvement initiatives.
  3. Compliance & Quality

    • Ensure all designs comply with applicable industry codes, company standards, and customer requirements.
    • Support QC and documentation control processes.
    • Maintain accurate design records and technical documentation per company policy.

Desired Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering [from ABET accredited program.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in coil design, heat exchangers, or HVAC equipment design.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks) and engineering analysis tools.
  • Experience with HVAC systems or thermal design is preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mechanical design principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with selection software such as CoilDesigner or Sporlan is a plus.

Professional Competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional coordination and documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Interaction with Others: Answers to Engineering Manager NAP. Must be able to accurately receive and understand instructions from supervisor to determine if further instruction is required before attempting to complete the task assigned. In constant communication with other departments. It is essential that the employee is able to work with all employees of the RAE team and shows a spirit of cooperation with others in the organization.

Working Environment: Primarily conducted in a climate-controlled office setting, with occasional exposure to a manufacturing environment including moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based in a climate-controlled environment, with periodic visits to the manufacturing floor.
  • Occasional exposure to shop conditions including noise, moving equipment, and fabrication processes.
