Water Plant Relief Operator/ Maintenance

THE POSITION
• Reports to: Water Plant Operations Superintendent (during operational duties) and the Water and Wastewater Plants Maintenance Superintendent (during maintenance duties).
• This job is classified as Safety Sensitive
• Responsible for the execution of Water Plant operations to produce clean water in compliance with all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) regulations.
• Understand water treatment theory/technology and apply that knowledge at the Water Plant.
• Responsible for the execution of Water Plant operations during shift coverage for an operator due to absence.
• When not providing coverage for operators, duties will include general maintenance outlined but not limited to duties below
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Relief Operator
• Responsible for operator day shift coverage (6:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) each Thursday.
• Provide coverage during other operator’s absences due to sick leave and annual leave (days, evenings, nights, and possibly holidays).
• Monitors supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) program to maintain a continuing check on the proper and efficient operation at the Water Plant facility.
• Collect water samples and perform lab analysis every two hours. Perform other water analyses as directed.
• Maintain accurate records of all lab data, operational data, chemical deliveries, and maintenance issues.
• Physically check all pumps and Water Plant processes.
• Monitor water pressures and tank levels to maintain efficient use of pumps.
• Analyze lab data for efficient and proper use of chemicals.
• Perform operational adjustments as needed.
• Monitor by SCADA: Plant II (remote pump station), Wastewater Treatment Plant, West lift station, security gate, and cameras.
• Communicate issues or concerns of processes or treatment to the Superintendent and/or to the next operator on shift.
• Communicate with the maintenance staff when needed.
• Maintain a clean working environment.
• Safely perform duties in accordance with OSHA policies.
• Other duties as assigned by the Water Plant Superintendent Maintenance
• Assist Water and Wastewater Plants Maintenance staff by performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
• Make a daily tour of all areas of the Water Plant and respond accordingly to any maintenance needs.
• Adjust functional parts of devices upon installation or as needed.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment and record daily activities. Report any issues to the Water and Wastewater Maintenance Superintendent
• Clean and maintain basins, filters, and other work areas as needed.
• Responsible for tracking tools, manuals, and drawings needed to complete day-to-day activities.
• Able to use hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, voltage meters, welders, cutting torches, hoists or cranes and ladders in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, and manufacturers specifications.
• Maintain and track inventoried maintenance items to ensure normally stocked items are on hand.
• Maintain clean, organized, and hazard free working environment.
• Maintains all Water Plant and Plant II on-line water analysis instruments.
• Maintains monthly checks of fire extinguishers and Risk Management Plan alarms.
• Ability to read water meters on a monthly basis. Verify readings in cases where consumption appears to be abnormal and record possible reasons for fluctuations.
• Ability to maintain water meters on an as needed basis.
• Ensures and adheres to safe work practices and procedures including lockout/tag out and confined space rules and regulations.
• Keep company truck maintained and clean as needed.
• All other duties as assigned by the Plant Operations or Maintenance Superintendent.
• On call to respond to emergencies at the Water Plant, Plant II, and Wastewater Plant.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS/PROFILE
1. EDUCATION – H.S. of GED; Any college is a plus.
• Valid Class C OKDEQ water operator license required with the ability to achieve a Class B license within 18 months.
• Valid Class C OKDEQ water operator lab license.
• Requires enrollment and completion of 40-hour Hazwoper training course with 8-hr renewals each year.
• Valid Class D Oklahoma Driver License
2. EXPERIENCE – A minimum of 5 years in maintenance type job or Water Plant operations.
• Knowledge of machines, tools, including designs, uses, repairs, and maintenance.
• Prefer experience with municipal or Water Plant operations.
3. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS / PROFICIENCIES
• Team Player – Willingness to roll up sleeves and contribute as a team leader or team member, depending on the requirements of the situation.
• Physical Duties – Must be able to lift 50 pounds and can work in confined areas in various weather
conditions. Ability to climb stairs and ladders and pass a fit test for SCBA use.
• Dependability - Requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable. Requires on-call duties when emergency situations arise after hours, and on weekends.
• Safety – Abide by safety practices while operating machinery, contact with dangerous chemicals, and performing tasks.
• Proactive – Ability to anticipate needs and challenges. Offer input and provide solutions for various improvements.
• Computer Proficiency – Demonstrate proficiency in the use of personal computers, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and SCADA.
4. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
During Operational Shifts
• Indoors in a control room with lab.
• Minimal outdoors when collecting samples, and routine plant inspections.
During Maintenance Shifts
• Will include plant work (only partial climate control).
• Can include confined spaces.
• Can include heights.
• Can include Oklahoma weather extremes outdoors.
• Can include operation of heavy equipment (if qualified)
• Can include operating motor vehicles.
• Can include Working in PPE due to chemical exposure
